As colder weather arrives, several different insect species will be looking to congregate inside homes and buildings. Some of these are invasive species. One such pest is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys). It has established populations in the Okanagan Valley, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island regions of British Columbia.

This insect can have a significant impact on the agricultural industry due to its feeding preferences for tree fruits, berries, grapes and vegetable crops. Its preferred host plant is Tree of Heaven – an invasive tree that continues to spread in the Okanagan-Similkameen.

To prevent the spread of brown marmorated stink bugs in the region and in your home, follow these guidelines:

  • Remove tree of heaven from your property
  • Clean and vacuum your home regularly and keep any food attractants in air-tight containers
  • Seal cracks in windows, doors and plumbing to block entrance points
