A new discovery of black henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) was identified by staff from the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society last month in the Oliver area. This is the second location where this invasive plant has been recorded in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.

Black henbane is on the Government of British Columbia’s “early detection and rapid response” species list. This means it is not currently established in the province and is a candidate for eradication. The small patch has been reported to provincial staff with the Ministry of Forests.

Black henbane is a foul-smelling plant in the nightshade family that is poisonous to humans and animals if ingested. It can outcompete native plants and desirable forage species, reducing biodiversity. It has large yellow-green flowers with purple veins and distinct seed heads. It is native to Eurasia and was originally brought to North America for use as a medicinal and ornamental plant.
